Exterior description and setting

Low proportioned, two storey vernacular farm house of possible mid 19th century origin, but now derelict. The building is set on the N side of the Slievenaman Road, 5 miles W of Newcastle.

The front façade faces roughly S and is symmetrical. To the centre of the ground floor is a relatively large, single storey flat roofed porch. This has a doorway (without door) to the E and a window opening without frame. To the left of the porch is a small ground floor window with the remains of a sash frame. To the right is a similar sized opening, now boarded. To the first floor are two very small windows which touch the eaves. That to the left has the remains of a sash frame while that to the right is practically frame-less.

Both gables are blank. The E gable has the remains of a thick rubble wall against it, which may once have belonged to an outbuilding. To the rear the is a tiny single pane window to left on the ground floor.

The façade is largely harled. The porch is brick constructed and appears to have been rendered but much of this has fallen away. The gabled roof is covered in natural slate. Many slates to the front have fallen off. There is a rendered chimney stack to each gable. No rw goods.

Historical information

There is a building shown on this site on the on the OS maps of 1834 and 1859 which in the second valuation of 1863 was in possession of a John McKnight. It is possible that the house noted in 1863 is that we see today, as there as similar two storey vernacular dwellings throughout this Trassey Valley area. The porch , however, is probably an early 20th century addition.
