Exterior description and setting

Long, two storey vernacular farmhouse of possible pre 1834 origin, but which may have assumed its present shape in the later 1800s. The house is set at the E side of the Crabtree Road 2 kilometres SE of Ballynahinch.

The W front has a centred small projecting lean-to porch. To the left are two 1/1 sash windows. To the right is a similar sash window. To the far left is door recess. To the first floor are three 1/1 sash windows which are located directly above the ground floor windows.

The S gable has one sash window to the left of the first floor.

The N gable is mainly obscured by an outhouse. Directly above the apex of the outhouse roof is a small window opening.

The Rear E façade has a number of small ground and first floor openings..

To the rear is a narrow laneway. The W is bounded by the rear wall of the house while the E is bounded by a 2 metre high retaining wall. A short bridge spans from the raised ground to a first floor level to the right side.

To the N the house abuts a small outhouse. To the S is a detached outbuilding which is set at right angles to the road. This outhouse has numerous small and randomly placed ‘ventilation openings’.

The façade is finished in painted rough cast. The gabled roof is slated and has three rendered chimney stacks.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1834, but not noted in the contemporary valuation records. It is possible that the present building is that shown on the map, but that it may have originally consisted of a single storey, and, like many other two storey vernacular dwellings, assumed its present two storey form in the later 1800s.

The property appears to have been vacant for some years.
