Exterior description and setting

One of a terrace of three three-storey houses directly fronting the west side of Kilmorey St. This particular building is at the left end (viewed from the street) and is three bays wide.

Natural slate gabled roof with cement- rendered chimney at left. Half-round metal rainwater goods with metal down pipe between first and second bays.

Elevation to street has smooth rendered-walls over raised base course, projecting eaves course and raised vee-jointed stucco quoins at left (on all floors).

A granite step leads to front entrance at middle. Painted four-panel (raised and fielded) timber door; original brass furniture, and plain rectangular transom light above. Door opening has raised rendered jambs with strap consoles supporting projecting entablature. To its right is a flat-headed vehicle entrance with pair of vertically-sheeted painted timber doors; rendered horizontal head to opening. To left of front door is a 2/2 (vertically divided) sliding sash window. Two identical windows to first and to second floors, in line with each other, but offset to left of ground floor openings. Ground floor window is wider than the rest, and those on top floor are diminished in height. All windows have exposed boxes, moulded architraves and granite cills.

Rear wall cement rendered, with projecting eaves course. Plastic rainwater goods on this side. An original two-storey abuts middle bay. At left, on ground floor of main block, is coach arch opening. At right is a 1/1 top hung timber window to back room. At first floor left and right are 1/1 sliding sash windows. At second floor is a 1/1 top hung windows to each of the three bays (plastic at left, otherwise timber).

The rear return, which has a natural slate gabled roof, has no openings to its left elevation. On right cheek is a casement window to ground floor, and three 1/1 sliding sash windows to first floor (this storey is at first half-landing level of main block). A modern one-storey flat-roofed extension now abuts its gable end. This extension has a modern window to right cheek and modern door to rear yard on left cheek All ground and first floor windows at rear have metal security grilles.

There is a very derelict rubble granite outhouse at the back of the yard.

This house is first recorded in the 1903 valuation revision (at the same time as no. 19) indicating its construction on, or shortly before, this date.

Evaluation

One of a small terrace of three three-storey houses. The façade of this modest Victorian terrace remains unaltered. Although plain, it is enlivened by embellishment to its door and window openings. It has group value in being one of three identical houses in this terrace. The terrace is also of interest in being one of several along this street.
