The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
A rock-faced granite block wall with gabled and oversailing copings between square terminal piers. Cast iron plaque inset depicts a Primate seated between two Yew trees; inscribed below with the words: ‘Jubin Cjnn Tracta’. Towards the base of the wall is a black polished granite plaque within a Gothic surround which has alternating black and grey granite voussoirs. Inscribed white letters read ‘In proud and loving memory of the patriots of Cochron and Iowans of Newry and all those from the town and district whose lives were sacrificed in the cause of freedom in 1798. Erected 1948 by the Newry Ninty-eight Commemoration Committee.’
Historical information
The original HMBB survey sheet (dated 11 November 1969) states that this memorial was originally a drinking fountain. A potato and fowl market is shown here on the 1899 OS map, and the wall may originally have been part of the boundary to these premises.

Evaluation
A rock-faced granite block wall with cast iron plaque. Of little architectural merit, it commemorates an important time in Irish and local history. It does not meet the statutory and policy tests as a building of special architectural or historic interest. The Conservation Area is an appropriate level of protection.
