Exterior description and setting

Multi-gabled, two-storey house, all in rock faced granite ashlar throughout, situated within the grounds of the Church of the Sacred Heart (HB16/29/017A), and entered through gates on Dublin Road (HB16/29/017C).

The roof is gabled and hipped with Westmorland slates and black ridge tiles. There are three rectangular chimneys, one on front ridge, one on the rear ridge and third on front pitch of façade roof. All have chamfered bases and projecting copings.

House is double piled with projecting gabled return to left of façade and flat roofed two-storey extension to rear right. Walls: raised, smooth faced chamfered base course. Window reveals and corners of house have smooth fielded edges. All gables have corbelled skews and small central louvred vent openings. Continuous string course between ground and first floor level. All windows (unless otherwise stated) have chamfered rockfaced ashlar heads and granite cills, and are white PVC double-glazed.

Façade (southwest facing): Gabled return: two windows to ground floor, two above on first floor. Main block: ground floor window to right (in line with one above). Flat roofed rock faced granite porch with tripartite stained glass window to left and modern timber door (with transom) on right cheek. One window to first floor, inline with porch and window below.

Left (northwest) elevation: Roof is gabled to right (façade) and hipped to left (rear elev.). Base course runs from façade (R-L) to only half way along this elevation. Stringcourse continues all the way to meet extension to left. Three windows to ground floor, two (above the left and central ground floor windows) to first floor. Abutting this elevation to the left, (stepped back a little) is the side of the flat roofed rear extension; rock faced granite walls, but no base course. Pebble dashed yard wall (with modern t+g door) continues from the left of this elevation.

Rear (northeast) elevation (enclosed within yard): Roof is hipped to right and gabled to left. Flat roofed, two storey extension (with parapet wall) projects on right side of elevation. It has one window and door to ground floor. Three narrow rectangular windows to first floor. No string or base course. Also two ground floor and two first floor windows on left cheek. The main building (rear pile) is to left of extension and has one window to ground floor.

Right (southeast) elevation: Consists of two gables with gutter running from the parapetted join. To ground floor right is a window. To ground floor left is a canted bay window with flat roof behind a parapet. One window below each gable at first floor. Pebble dashed yard wall continues to right.

Historical information

Foundation stone of church laid by Cardinal Logue on 11th June 1911; church dedicated in April 1916. Architects were Ashlin and Coleman of Dublin. Built by Messrs Neary and O’Hare, Newry.
