Exterior description and setting

Three storey (+ attic) building on west side of Abbey Way (now back to its original name of Upper Water Street).

Roof is pitched natural slate with the wall head of a now demolished neighbouring building to right gable and a modern brick chimney to left gable. There is a cast iron skylight to front pitch. Rainwater goods are plastic with a down pipe to left of façade.

Wall to façade is painted lined cement render. At ground floor is a modern shop with door to right leading to upper floors. Shop is all modern with large plastic fascia over door. Door to right has a roller shutter closed over it. There are three windows to each upper floor. All are 2/2 sliding sashes with painted granite cills. Those to second floor are diminished in height. Rear not inspected

Historical information

Shown on 1835 OS map and described as a house at £22 in 1838 valuation. Noted as three and one-third storeys high in 1863 valuation. Had become a licensed house by end of century.

Early 19th Century building but now completely remodelled.

General comments

This building originally had the address 6 Abbey Way. Following various realignments etc in the area, the street name was changed to Upper Water Street, hence the change of address.
