Exterior description and setting

When originally surveyed in 1969 there was a three-storey c1800 property on the site. This building has since been demolished and replace by a modern structure of no interest.

Historical information

The first survey card describes this building “c1800 two houses of three floors with cellars and attics built of squared and coursed granite with moulded eaves cornice. Slated roofs. No 8 is five windows wide (glazing bars to 1st and 2nd floors) with central entrance flanked by unfluted Doric columns with entablature blocks supporting open bed mould pediment framing semicircular fanlight (g.b) to S of entrance is a shop front of three semicircular arched openings with V-channelled piers rising to moulded imposts, central door, fanlight & window heads have s.w glazing. Cart entrance to No.10 now inappropriately shopped – eight windows wide."

Shown on 1835 OS map and valued as a dwelling at £22 in 1838 valuation. Described as 3 1/3 storeys high in 1863 valuation.

General comments

This building originally had the address 8-10 Abbey Way. Following various realignments etc in the area, the street name was changed to Upper Water Street, hence the change of address.
