Exterior description and setting

Three storey building on west side of Upper Water Street.

Roof is pitched with natural slates (laid in diminishing courses) and ties in with the roof with the adjoining property to the right. Rainwater goods are plastic.

Walls to façade are painted lined render. At ground floor is a modern shopfront consisting of a glazed timber door and large picture window to right, with painted fascia. There are two openings to each upper floor. Those to first floor are both 1/1 modern top hung windows. Those to second floor are both 1/1 exposed box sliding sashes with horns. All windows to façade have painted granite cills.

Rear elevation is completely abutted by a large cement render return with all modern windows and doors. It opens onto an alley which is shared with no. 24 (and accessed through door at ground floor right of no.24.

Historical information

Shown on 1835 OS map and valued at £26 in 1838 valuation book. 1863 valuation describes it as 3 1/3 storeys high. Shop added about 1906.

General comments

This building originally had the address 26 Abbey Way. Following various realignments etc in the area, the street name was changed to Upper Water Street, hence the change of address.
