Exterior description and setting

A two-bay vernacular house, consisting of a one-and-a-half storey left bay and a two-storey right bay. It is aligned W-E on the E side of Killeen School Road.

Both roofs are pitched natural slate, with advanced granite eaves course and no rainwater goods. Right bay has a corbelled brick chimney to each gable with a yellow brick band and tiled skews.

Walls are lime-rendered random rubble (unless otherwise stated). There is a slightly advanced chamfered base course to all elevations.

Principal elevation faces N. Right bay has a projecting lined cement-rendered entrance porch (see later) set to left end and window opening to its right. Aligned above each is a window opening to first floor, all have the remains of exposed box 1/1 sliding sashes with margin panes. Porch roof is flat and concealed behind a decorative swept parapet. Door is gone but seems to have had sidelights. The right and left cheeks are blank.

Left bay has two ground floor window openings, smaller and detailed as before.

The left gables of each bay are cement rendered - that to right bay is blank and left bay has a central 2/2 sliding sash window to upper level.

Rear elevation of left bay is abutted to right end by a later lean-to porch (see later). To its left is a window opening to each floor. That to ground floor is detailed as façade. That to first floor is a side hung casement divided by central timber mullion. Porch has a monopitched artificial slate roof with cement skews. Walls are cement rendered. Front face has a rectangular window opening, its left cheek has a door opening and its right cheek has a small window opening with the remains of a metal top-hung casement.

Rear elevation of left bay has two window openings to ground floor, detailed as façade.

Right gable has a 2/2 sliding sash to first floor left.

Setting:

House is set in an open field with a number of outbuildings to rear. A small cement rendered wall at left end, curves sharply to enclose a well.

Historical information

Although a building is shown here on the 1835 OS map, it is not to the same alignment as the present one, which is first shown on the 1861 edition. Its valuation in 1862 was £1 and it remains at this level in the Valuation revision books. It is probably of mid 19th century date.

Evaluation

A vernacular house with evolved plan form with outbuildings to rear and small well incorporated into the farmyard wall. Early 20thC decorative brick chimney stacks have also been added, making a dominant feature.
