Exterior description and setting

House at right end of a terrace of six similar three storey/ two bay late 19thC houses facing the sea on NW side of street.

Pitched natural slate roof with rendered chimney and tiled verge at right end. Moulded overhanging eaves course carries half-round plastic gutters on advanced eaves.

Front wall is rendered and painted. Continuous moulded painted cill courses to the upper floors. Left bay is narrower than the right one and contains the main entrance in a semi-elliptical headed opening. Modern panelled timber door is flanked with sidelights (with aprons). Consoles support an entablature underneath a plain fanlight. Directly above is a 1/1 sliding sash window to each upper floor. That to second floor is slightly diminished in height.

The right bay has a canted bay window rising full height, with canted natural slate roof tied into main roof and sharing common eaves. Each face has a 1/1 sliding sash window, those on the side cheeks being narrower than the front one. Those to second floor are slightly diminished in height.

A dwarf wall with modern concrete balustrade encloses the front garden.

Left gable is party wall with No.17 Seaview (HB16/12/017E).

Right gable is party wall with No.19 Seaview (HB16/12/016A). Exposed section of wall is blank.

Rear elevation was not inspected.

Historical information

First appears in the Valuation revision book entry form 1877, along with No.17. It was the first pair in this terrace of six houses to be built, the adjoining pair being (Nos 15 and 16) being erected in 1878 and the last (Nos 13 and 14) in 1880.

A much altered end of terrace house, although its proportions are in character with the rest of the buildings on the sea front.
