Exterior description and setting

Two storey / single bay house set in a terrace and facing the sea on Osborne Promenade. Its main elevation (with entrance) is on its right gable.

Pitched artificial slate roof with unpainted rendered chimney to left end of ridge. Front pitch of roof has a wall-head dormer with hipped roof and modern casement windows. Ogee rainwater goods.

Front elevation faces SW and is lined rendered and painted. At ground floor left there is a large modern window (in an enlarged opening). There are two first floor windows, both with fixed lights with top hung transoms over. Painted granite cills. At right hand side, between ground floor and first floor is a stucco panel reading ‘OSBORNE/ TERRACE’.

Small area to front of house is enclosed by a cement rendered dwarf wall with granite coping.

The left gable is abutted by no.2. Osborne Promenade (HB16/12/004A).

Rear elevation not inspected.

The right gable faces SE and is rendered and painted. It has modern windows to each floor. There is one at ground floor left, to right of which is a modern lean-to porch with monopitched roof and all modern details. There are two first floor windows and two windows to attic gable.

Historical information

Shown on the 1834 OS 6” map, along with the rest of this terrace. Noted in the 1835 First Valuation as being occupied by Mrs Osborne (this family also occupies the adjoining two houses at this time). Identical measurements to its neighbour – 25ft x 36ft6in x 25ft. An old postcard of Osborne Promenade shows the façade of these houses to have had tripartite Georgian paned sash windows to ground floor and 6/6 sashes to first floor. The old photograph of these building shows its right elevation to have been slate hung earlier in this century. Locals believe that this house and the one next door were a single dwelling at one time.
