Exterior description and setting

One and half storey/ three bay house set in garden on E side of Mound Road.

Half-hipped natural slate mansard roof with plain timber eaves carrying half-round metal rainwater goods. Cement rendered chimney to either side of central bay. Three gable dormers to front pitch and one to rear pitch, each with pitched natural slate roofs (with wavy-cut bargeboards and small finials) and containing a pair of 4/1 side hung casements; slate hung cheeks. Walls are dashed with smooth cement render trim to corners, base course and gable detailing. Windows have similar decorative eared architraves.

Principal elevation faces NW to road. Main entrance is contained within a porch which abuts the right end of the left bay. It has a gabled natural slate roof with plain overhanging bargeboards. Its front wall is dashed and contains a pair of fixed windows, each with two small glazed transoms. Flanking the pair to left and right are plain sidelights. The left cheek of the porch has similar glazing. The right cheek of the porch has a modern four panelled door (top two panes round-headed and glazed), flanked with narrow sidelights.

The remainder of the left bay on the front elevation has a 4/2 sliding sash window (with horns) and painted cill. The middle bay has a slightly larger window opening containing a pair of 6/1 sliding sashes. The right bay has a window similar to the left bay.

The left gable has a 6/1 sliding sash window at ground floor and is blank above.

The rear elevation is abutted to right by a rear return. The remainder of the wall is blank.

The rear return roof is as that to main block with two gable dormers (wider than those to main block are) on its left pitch. Its walls are as main block. Its left cheek has a modern four-panelled door to ground floor left, with glazed sidelights. Remaining wall has three modern 6/1 top-hung casement windows. Its end gable has a pair of French windows at ground floor and a small modern window in gable. Is right cheek has a t+g sheeted door with glazed top panel. To its right is a pair of 2/1 modern side-hung casement windows. To right of these windows is a narrow margin paned window.

The right gable of the main block has a partly glazed timber door (as front porch) to ground floor centre set within an open timber porch, the pitched natural slate roof of which has a wavy bargeboard and is supported on plain timber posts with trellis frames filling its cheeks.

Small mature gardens to front and rear. Driveway from road runs up right side of house to a rear yard area. Pair of low decorative timber gates to the road.

Historical information

Although a house is shown on this site on the 1834 OS 6” map, it was demolished around 1919 and no house is noted in the Valuation Books until sometime after 1931. The present house would therefore appear to be a complete rebuild, probably of inter-War date.
