The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Located in an elevated Beech tree copse in a field to NE of the walled garden.
Subterranean chamber is accessed by an L shaped passageway within which is a flight of steps which descend from SE. The steps have rubble stone side walls and a red brick barrel vaulted roof (now collapsed). The only other external feature is a small circular granite dressed opening lighting the top of the main chamber and set in ground to SW of the steps.
Historical information
Although likely to have been constructed during the late 18th or early 19thC, this structure is not marked on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd edition OS maps.
