Exterior description and setting

Much altered two and half storey/ two bay house, the second from left in a terrace of four once identical mid 19thC houses at W end of Havelock Place.

Pitched artificial slate roof. Cement rendered chimney to left end. Front pitch has two modern canted wall head dormers with canted roofs and modern windows. Modern cement rendered walls with stepped quoins to either side.

Front door to ground floor right is modern with plain glazed semicircular fanlight over. Large wide window to its left and two windows to first floor. All windows are top-hung timber casements and have modern rendered architraves.

Rendered and raised dwarf wall encloses small front area.

Left gable is party wall with adjacent house.

Rear elevation not inspected.

Right gable is party wall with adjacent house.

Historical information

A block of five houses is shown on the 1834 Valuation town map (unfortunately their dimensions cannot be determined from the corresponding Valuation book). The fact that the same block only contained four houses on the 1861 map suggests a complete rebuilt in the intervening period. The 1863 Valuation book describes the house as measuring 7.5yds x 9yds x 2.5 storeys (with a 1.75 storey return).

A later 19thC Lawrence photograph shows a cast iron skylight to front pitch. All windows are 8/8 sliding sashes. Walls look harled. Railings on front dwarf wall.
