Exterior description and setting

The original building on this site has been replaced by a modern two storey youth club with gabled roof, advanced and gabled central bay, rendered walls and timber casement windows.

Historical information

Two buildings shown on 1834 valuation map. Described as two two-storey houses in c.1861 valuation book.
First HMBB survey card states, “c1800. A terrace of two storey buildings stepped down hill. The walls are rendered and roofs are slated. Part of G/F is used as a bar, remainder is lighted by two display windows and one D/H (double hung) window with plain sashes. There are three street entrances, one recessed, with plain fanlights over. Four D/H windows on F/F have full G/B (glazing bars) and two others have sashes divided into two panes.”

The 1973 photograph of Hilltown Market House (Historic Building Archive) shows this building. It shows a chimney on right gable, and a natural slate roof. It has a large square fixed window to G/F left, with a doorway (with transom) to its right. Over are two 3/6 sliding sashes. The right bay is only partially shown, with door to left and a 3/6 sash above. All windows have granite cills. Façade is painted with “Wines F. Kiernan Spirits”.

The 1978 photograph of Hilltown Market House (Historic Building Archive) shows this building to be roofless.
