The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
A dressed granite post set in hedge on west side of road. Measures 25 cm (10in) square/ 50 cm (20in) high, and finished with a pyramidal top. Inscribed on its three road faces with 15 cm (6in) high number ‘18’ (the distance in Irish miles from Newry).
Historical information
Although first depicted on the 1919 OS 6" map (Down sheet 56), the fact that the measurement is in Irish miles suggests that it is probably of early 19th century date.

Evaluation
An interesting survival, all the more remarkable in that it is one of 17 such milestones which still survive (out of a total of 24) between Newry and Newcastle. See also HB16/02/052.
