Exterior description and setting
Site Visit 16th November 2010 - building has been demolished.
Pair of single-storey buildings forming single house facing east to sea on elevated site.
Roof s are gabled with natural slate. Building to right has higher ridge. That to left formerly thatched but now slated with three brick corbelled courses to raise eaves. Flat roofed extensions to rear, and a dormer to rear of right hand building. Painted metal rainwater goods.
Walls of both buildings are wet dash rendered, unpainted, with black painted smooth render base course and granite corner blocks.
Left building has three bays. East elevation has new framed and sheeted door to central gabled porch with granite steps and threshold. New but appropriately designed 4/4 sliding sash windows (with granite cills) and also a small six-paned casement, all to left of porch. Inappropriate timber windows to rear (cills are concrete).
Right building east elevation retains original sheeted door. One window on either side of door (right one sits higher), both 6/6 sliding sash.
Pump in front yard (inscribed J. Gurrie), and flat iron gate.
Historical information
A building is shown here on the 1834 OS 6” map. Right hand building was formerly a creamery. The 1972 survey card states 'A harled and whitened thatched cottage with chimney on either gable. Sash windows are margin paned. Corrugated iron roofed part to east. Sheeted door. Timber and metal ridge. One window to rear. Corrugated iron roofed annex.'
The house at left was formerly thatched but accidental fire c.1987-8 burnt out interior. Rebuilt with slate roof and modern interior.
