The Department's description

This is a two-storey building facing south east. The gabled roof has natural slates and tile copings. Walls are of roughly dressed granite blocks laid in courses (with some snecking). External stairway has 13 granite steps leads to a vertically sheeted tongue and groove door off centre in façade of first floor. There are similar doors at left and right on ground floor. There is a shuttered opening on either side of first floor door. A finely dressed granite datestone reading “1907” projects from the wall to the right of the first floor door.

There are two shuttered window openings on the first floor rear elevation.

A one-storey gabled shed abuts the right gable.

A building is shown at this location on the 1834 OS 6” map. The present structure is obviously a replacement.

Although this type of external staircase building was once common in Mourne, few now survive in an unaltered state. This example is also of interest in having an attested construction date. It does not have sufficient quality to warrant listing.
