The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
This kiln is constructed of rounded granite fieldstones with a squared granite rubble frontage. The pot is still in evidence, albeit heavily overgrown. The draw hole is partly buried and obscured by recent dumping. It does not appear to have had a loading ramp.
Historical information
A lime kiln is shown here on the 1834 OS 6” map.
The owner recalls his father telling him that he saw it work 60-70 years ago. The raw limestone may have been brought from an outcrop at Mill Bay. The 1970 survey card states ‘ built of granite boulders and some roughly squared stone with pinnings, all in grey wall construction. The kiln opening is spanned by a granite lintel with two smaller lintels in the interior. The circular flue is open. 15’ frontage.’
