The Department's description

A wrought-iron gate screen leading to a much altered house.

Screen consists of a cement-rendered concave dwarf wall supporting painted wrought-iron railings; it is terminated by an octagonal gate pier with shallow pyramidal cap and moulded base; makers mark “RIDDEL & CO/ MAKERS/ BELFAST”. Gate piers carry a pair of wrought-iron gates with box lock. Gates and railings have spear-headed vertical bars with central moulded bulb. Gates have an additional row of similarly detailed dogbars bars and scrolled meeting rail. Gates no longer closes due to cattle grille.

These gates are at the start of a driveway to Johnstown House. Although this road is shown on the 1834 OS 6" map, the gates and screen do not appear to be depicted until 1907, indicating a later 19th century erection date.

Primary sources:
1. OS 6" map 1st edition (1834), Co Fermanagh sheet 40 (PRONI OS 6/4/40/1).
