Exterior description and setting

An ‘L’ plan two-storey / three bay house with symmetrical façade aligned NE-SW on the W side of the main Clones to Magheraveely road.

Hipped natural slate roof with three chimneys: one to right hand side of rear pitch of main block and one placed between each bay of the NE elevation. Advanced boxed eaves support rainwater goods. Walls are harled with stepped quoins over an advanced and chamfered stone base course. All windows are 2/2 (horizontally divided) sliding sashes with horns and stone cills (unless otherwise stated).

Principal elevation faces SE. Central bay contains the entrance door and portico. The door is double-leaf three panelled timber with beaded muntin and plain transom over. The portico is raised on two stone steps (diminishing in size). It consists of a plain stone canopy supported on two plain pilasters (flanking door) and two Doric columns. Each end bay has a window and also a shallow segmental-headed window to first floor. Central bay has two semicircular headed windows.

SW elevation has a window to each floor (that to first floor is segmental-headed).

Rear elevation is composed of the NW gable of the projecting section and the right hand side of the main block. In the angle of the two is a full-height return. Abutting the corner created by the return and main block is a small single-storey outbuilding (the exposed section of the main block is blank). The projecting section is blank but is abutted at left-hand side of right cheek by a slightly lower two-storey addition. All abutments are detailed as house. The return has two windows to each floor at gable (those to right-hand side are diminished in size). The left cheek abuts the projecting section; the right cheek is abutted by the outbuilding and is blank. The addition has a sliding sash window to each floor at SW gable (that to ground floor is 2/4, that to first floor is 4/4). Right cheek has a modern timber door to centre. Left cheek is blank. The outbuilding has a monopitched natural slate roof. NW face has a timber-sheeted door to left and a small 2x2 fixed pane window to right. SW face has a 1x3 fixed pane window (all without cills).

NE elevation is also three bays wide. Left and right bays each have two narrow windows to each floor (those to first floor are semi-circular headed). Central bay has a single window to each floor (that to first floor is segmental-headed).

Historical information

This house was erected in the early 1870s. The Valuation revision book entry for 1873 notes its value at £12.10s.0d but that there was "more to be done to house and offices to be built". This work appears to have been completed by 1875, as its valuation increases to £13.12s.0d. It is cited as Magheramore House in the 1907 OS 6" map.
