Exterior description and setting

Remains of a single girder span bridge carrying a single-track railway line over the Ulster Canal. Only the highly skewed abutments now survive. Both are of randomly-laid rock-faced limestone blocks and are slightly advanced at their NE ends. Both ends of both abutments have margined quoins and moulded sandstone copings. Concrete bearing blocks (for the metal girders) survive at both ends of the north abutment. There are remnants of a parapet at the NE end of the south abutment. This abutment continues to SW as a random rubble embankment retaining wall. The ends of the abutments are now in poor condition.

Historical information

This bridge is on the line between Clones and Cavan which was opened in 1862 by the Clones & Cavan Extension Railway. The line was absorbed into the Great Northern Railway network in 1876 and remained in use until 1960.
