The Department's description

Exterior description and setting

A modern reinforced-concrete horizontal span links the mainland with Derrykerrib Island. It carries a one-and-a-half lane road (+ footpath to each side) across a branch of Upper Lough Erne. Vertical metal railings to both sides.

Historical information

A bridge to the island was first mooted in 1929 as a result of the imposition of the border which curtailed access to Belturbet, the commercial centre for this locality, and necessitated better links with Newtownbutler, on the Northern Ireland side.

Construction of the bridge went out to tender in 1939, being won by A.H. Tisdall (a Lisnaskea contractor); the steelwork was supplied by Robert Craig & Sons (Belfast). Work began in the same year, and was presumably completed shortly thereafter.

EHS survey notes dated October 1993 note that a resident described the earlier bridge has being a metal girder span with timber deck and metal railings.

This replacement bridge dates from 1992.
