Exterior description and setting

A single-storey three bay direct entry thatched dwelling, with attic, aligned roughly E-W along the N side of road. To front is a small garden enclosed by hedgerows and accessed by a pair of cement-rendered gate piers with pyramidal caps supporting a cast-iron gate.

Principal elevation faces S. Walls are lime-rendered, whitewashed and lined over random rubble with contrasting basecourse. To either end is a cement-rendered vertical band. Set to right of centre bay is a windbreak porch with modern glazed timber door; left and right cheeks are blank. To its left is a 3/3 sliding sash window (centre pane larger) with horns and painted stone cill, set within a painted sweeping surround mimicking an architrave. Left and right bays each have an identical window.

Left gable is abutted by a single-storey outbuilding with corrugated-metal roof, lime-rendered walls and t+g doors.

The rear elevation is lined cement-rendered and abutted by modern return; the exposed section is blank. Extension has pitched artificial slate roof with over-hanging boxed eaves. Walls are cement-dashed with smooth rendered basecourse. All windows are modern uPVC with concrete cills. The E cheek has a glazed timber door to left and a window to its right. Its rear (N) gable has a landscape window. W cheek is abutted by a small central heating unit to left, to right of which is an obscurely glazed window.

Right gable has a small metal-framed window to attic with painted stone cill.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1834 / 35, but not noted in the contemporary valuation. It is recorded in the second valuation of 1862, however, with the occupant listed as Mary McDonagh, Rev. Baptist Barton Crozier the immediate lessor, and the rateable value £1.

A delightful direct-entry thatched dwelling set back from roadside by a small garden. Despite the modern extension to rear it retains most of its original architectural features.
