Exterior description and setting

A symmetrical two storey / three bay house aligned SW-NE on the E side of the road directly S of Newtownbutler Village.

Pitched artificial slate roof with a pebble dashed chimney to each gable. Advanced eaves with a modern timber soffit support ogee plastic rainwater goods. Walls are pebble-dashed over a painted cement-rendered base course. Windows are 2/2 sliding sashes with horns, exposed boxes, and stone cills.

Principal elevation faces NW. To centre is a t+g sheeted door with cast-iron door furniture, narrow sidelights and a segmental headed fanlight. To either side bay is a window. Aligned above ground floor openings are three windows, all diminished in height. That to centre is a 2x2 side-hung casement.

Left gable is abutted by a lower outbuilding. The exposed section is blank. Outbuilding is all detailed as house but with natural slates and a chimney to gable. NW elevation has a 3x2 fixed-pane window with flush cill set at right. The gable is blank. Rear elevation has two t+g-sheeted doors, one to left and one to right of centre.

Rear elevation of main block is abutted to centre by a shallow full height return. Left bay has a timber top-hung casement (all rear windows are as this) with concrete cill to ground floor. Right bay has a window to right-hand side at ground floor and to first floor centre.

The return is all detailed as house with a chimney to rear gable. SE face has a window to first floor right and a narrow window to ground floor left. Left cheek has a window to each floor. Right cheek is abutted by a single storey lean-to annexe (as house with a monopitched roof). It has a door to SE face and a window to exposed cheek.

Right gable of main block has a sliding sash window to each side at first floor.

Setting:
The house is enclosed from the road by a low rubble stone wall with a hedge and is well concealed by a maturely planted garden. It is accessed by a modern decorative gate hung on square-in-section chamfered stone gate piers with raised and fielded panels to each side and moulded stone coping.

Historical information

A building is shown on this plot on the 1834 OS 6" map. It is described in the 1835 Valuation book as a dwelling belonging to Captain Maguire and is valued at £3.12s.0d; no dimensions are given, but its relatively high value suggests a substantial structure. By 1862, its occupant was James Maguire and its dimensions are given as 42ft x 24ft x 2 storeys, with a 40ft6in x 15ft x 1 storey return. The house is probably of early 19th century date. It is cited as Lurganboy Cottage on the 1907 OS map.
