Exterior description and setting

Record at 14.11.2022: This building has been demolished. Description below describes building at time of survey (28.11.2000).

Record at 05.08.2005. As below except that the front door and canted bay windows are boarded up and other windows are broken. The two central gate piers are demolished.

A two-storey/ three bay house aligned roughly N-S on the W side of Bridge Street, to the N of St Mary’s RC Church (HB12/02/036).

Pitched natural slate roof laid in decorative pattern; 2 x 3 courses of fishscale to front pitch only. Overhanging eaves carry plain timber bargeboards to gables. Two polychrome brick chimneys – one between each bay. Half-round metal rainwater goods.

Principal elevation faces E. Walls are cement-dashed and painted with stepped and painted stone quoins. To centre is modern stained timber entrance door with narrow glazed transom over and set within moulded stucco reveals. To left and right bays is a canted bay window with natural slate roof; each side contains a 1/1 margin-paned exposed-box sliding sash window. Aligned above to first floor are three similarly detailed windows with painted stone cills, all diminished in height.

Left gable has a top-hung timber casement to first floor right.

Rear elevation is abutted to left by a single-storey return (detailed as house) with monopitched roof. The exposed right section has a 1/1 margin-paned sash window to ground floor left and a 2/2 sliding sash window to first floor. Return has a top-hung casement window to end gable and a modern timber sheeted door to right cheek. The left cheek could not be inspected.

Right gable has two first floor windows – as those to façade and a blind roundel to apex.

Front site is enclosed to road by a hedgerow and chamfered and painted gate piers with shallow caps and finials supporting a modern cast-iron gate.

Historical information

This house is first cited in the Valuation revision book entry of 1892. It was occupied by James Maguire and the measurements are given as 33ft x 15ft x 2 storeys.
