Exterior description and setting

A two-storey/ three-bay house aligned W-E on a lane to the SE of Lisnavoe Townland.

Pitched natural slate roof (formerly thatched) with a brick chimney to party wall between each bay. That to left is cement-rendered and coped; that to right is lime-rendered with no coping. A slightly advanced eaves course supports half-round metal rainwater goods. Walls are harled over random rubble. All windows are 2/2 exposed box sliding sashes with stone cills (unless otherwise stated).

Principal elevation faces N. Left and right bays each have a window to each floor. Central bay has a window to each floor at left-hand side and a timber sheeted door with narrow transom over and accessed by a single cement step to right. All first floor windows are diminished in height.

Left and right gables are blank.

Rear elevation has a window to each floor at each bay. All ground floor windows are timber top-hung casements, with the exception of that to left bay which is a 2x4 metal framed top-hung casement. All first floor windows are 1x3 with small top-hung section to central pane.

Outbuildings:
To W of house is an outbuilding with pitched natural slate roof and squared rubble stone walls. N gable has a large flat-headed voussoired arched opening. E elevation has a timber-sheeted door to left end. Other elevations are blank.

Setting:
The house and outbuilding occupy an isolated elevated site and is accessed from the road by a long winding lane through open farmland. It is set in a modern farmyard with outbuildings (of no interest) and a modern farmhouse to rear.

Historical information

Shown on the 1834 OS 6” map. The fact that it is valued in the first valuation suggests that it was probably in its present form. It possibly dates from the earlier 19th century.

Evaluation

Sited on an isolated and exposed site, this vernacular house (formerly thatched) has some original features intact and retains a good deal of its original character. The outbuilding is also of some interest.
