Exterior description and setting

Checking survey carried out in October 2025 - the house is now derelict and very overgrown with vegetation and much historic fabric has been lost. The following survey was carried out in October 2000:

A symmetrical two-storey (+attic) three-bay house with projecting gabled central bay, aligned West-East close to the West boundary of Inver Townland.

Pitched natural slate roof with corbelled polychrome brick chimney to party wall between each bay. Rainwater goods are half-round metal. Walls are harled over rubble-stone. All windows are exposed box 2/2 sliding sash windows (no horns) and with stone cills (unless otherwise stated).

Principal elevation faces South. Central bay projects and contains entrance at South face; it consists of a heavy four-panelled door with narrow transom and brass door-furniture and flanked by a 1/1 tall narrow sidelight to either side. Above is a Venetian window comprising a semicircular 4/2 sash, with 1/1 flanking sidelights. Directly above this window, set into apex, is a stone tablet inscribed ‘Erected / by John & Martha Ross / 1840 Raised by / Alex Ross 1910’. Right and left cheeks each have a window to each floor. Left and right bays also have a window to each floor; those to first floor are at eaves level and have gablets over.

Left gable is abutted to ground floor centre by a lean-to shed. There is a window to either side at first-floor level. The shed has a monopitched natural slate roof and is detailed as house; it has a tongue+grooved sheeted door to North elevation and other elevations are blank.

Rear elevation has a window to each floor at left and right bay. Central bay has three closely-spaced windows to each floor - two windows and a door to ground floor, and three windows to first floor.

Right gable has a window at left on ground floor, a window to either side on first floor, and an attic window to apex.

Setting
The house is remarkably well concealed by maturely planted gardens (almost encroaching on the house itself!) to all sides and is set at the end of a short tree-lined avenue accessed by wrought iron gates hung on cement rendered gate piers with chamfered caps.

Historical information

A building is first shown (beside a road) on the 1857 OS map. This concurs with the 1840 datestone. By the 1907 edition, the road had been realigned and the house was now in its own grounds. The 1840 house was probably a one-storey building. In its present form, it appears to date to 1910.

Evaluation

Detached two-storey, three-bay dwelling in rural location, immediately north of Inver Lough near Rosslea, Co Fermanagh.
House formerly retained harling over rubble-stone walls, natural slate roof, original timber sliding sash windows, and of particular note, a Venetian window to front below a stone tablet inscribed ‘Erected / by John & Martha Ross / 1840 Raised by / Alex Ross 1910’.
However, the house is now derelict and very overgrown with vegetation. The loss of historic fabric does not now allow the house to express its significance and it therefore does not meet the Criteria for Listing.
