Exterior description and setting

The single-bay remains of an end-of-terrace two-storey house, built c.1830, located to the south side of Main Street. Square-on-plan with single-storey lean-to extension to south-west.

Roof is pitched natural slate with blue/black clay ridge tiles; red brick chimney. Walls are lime-rendered over rubble construction and projecting plinth. Windows are square-headed timber-framed 1/1 sliding sash; all have painted sandstone sills.

Principal elevation faces north-east; single window at ground floor surmounted by single 6/6 sliding sash window at first floor.

South-east gable is abutted by 40 Main Street (HB11/19/019C); exposed section to eaves is blank.

South-west elevation contains single window at first floor; abutted at ground floor by smooth rendered lean-to extension containing vertically-sheeted timber door.

North-west gable is exposed; smooth rendered to eaves height; exposed rubble above; evidence of adjoining building now removed.

Setting

House directly accessed from street at north; at south, small yard enclosed by single-hedging and timber fence to street front.

Historical information

There are buildings present on the site from the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833, however the present building appears to date from c.1865.

Valuation town plans show a building on the site from the time of the Townland Valuation (1828-40), however a positive identification of the current building is difficult to make from these plans. It appears to correspond to a building that is initially valued at £1.10s in the Annual Revisions (1860-1929). A marginal note reads, ‘Two new houses in progress here’ and an amendment to the subsequent fieldbook in 1865 records a house and yard occupied by James McGadrickan and leased from Peter Fox. It is valued at £2.10s along with its neighbour to the west which has now gone. There are various changes of occupier.

In 1935 the Munster and Leinster Bank of Cork lease the house from Peter Fox and it is valued at £3. The valuer notes, “Small office…used by bank on certain days as required”.

Evaluation

The remains of a two-storey terrace house, built c.1830. The building retains its original form, proportions and materials, with no alterations and modernisation and, as a group, these were an increasingly rare example of urban vernacular - a type that is fast-disappearing.
