Exterior description and setting

A double-span road over river bridge, built c.1850, carrying Tirmurty Road over Cappagh Burn. Bridge orientated north-south; uncoursed random rubble piers and spandrels; segmental coping to rubble parapet wall. East parapet wall at south terminates at the junction with roughcast/ brick boundary wall. West parapet wall at north incorporates post box. Two semi-circular-headed arches with dressed voussoirs; soffit is lime rendered rubble stone.

The carriageway is approximately 5m wide. West side of bridge is accessed from north through replacement cast-iron gate and rubble steps to river. West retaining wall is abutted by rubble walling enclosing walkway from river edge.

Historical information

On the first edition of the ordnance survey map dated 1834 the road approaches the river and leaves it again on the other side, no bridge is present. The second edition shows the current bridge, uncaptioned, and a ‘Corn Mill’ and ‘Flax Mill’ nearby.

Evaluation

A double-span road over river bridge, built c.1850, carrying Tirmurty Road over Cappagh Burn. This simple sandstone bridge, constructed of random rubble with dressed voussoirsand with inset post box, remains largely intact. It is a good example of the type, in original condition.
