Exterior description and setting

A freestanding stone disused kiln, built c.1840, terraced into rear hillside, located on the north side of Glenpark Road. Rectangular on plan, facing west.

The flat-headed disused kiln roof is concealed under vegetation. Walling is squared and tooled limestone with flush cut quoins.

Principal (west) elevation has a double-rebated elliptical arch-headed recess with a round-headed aperture at centre base of second regression with cut voussoirs and stone threshold within recess. Cheeks are blank and rear elevation is abutted to base by hillside, exposed section is obscured by foliage.

Setting:-
The disused kiln is situated on the sloping wooded ground on rural road.

Historical information

The limekiln first appears on the second edition OS map of 1854. On the fourth edition of 1936 it is captioned as a limekiln.

Evaluation

This symmetrical freestanding stone disused kiln terraced into rear hillside, located on the north side of Glenpark Road. It displays good stonework and represents the rural industrial heritage of the district. However, the setting has been compromised and there are other, better, examples listed.
