Exterior description and setting

Detached symmetrical single-bay single-storey former primary school dated 1869; located to the east side of Greenan Road, Trillick. T-plan facing west, with central single-storey gabled return to west.

Roof is hipped natural slate (central gable on west front); blue/black clay ridge tiles; single brick corbelled chimneystack to west return; corbelled eaves course supporting u-profile cast-iron rainwater goods. Walls are roughcast rendered with stepped projecting quoins and plinth. Windows are removed; openings now boarded with stone cills.

Principal elevation faces west and is abutted at centre by entrance bay set forward and containing central vertically sheeted timber door flanked by window opening at each side; datestone to apex which reads; ‘GRANNAN National School 1869’. Both cheeks are blank; exposed sections of main wall at left and right are blank.

North elevation contains two window openings.

East elevation is blank.

South elevation is detailed as north.

Set within a remote rural landscape and bounded to road by remains of random rubble walling and wire fence.

Historical information

The school is first shown on the third edition OS map of 1905, captioned ‘Grannan School’.

It is added to Valuation Revisions in 1871 as a ‘National School & Garden’, valued at £2.15s. According to the D.I.A, the school was erected in 1870, and the architect is unknown.

Detached symmetrical single-bay single-storey former primary school dated 1869; located to the east side of Greenan Road, Trillick. The plan form and external detailing remain largely intact. The building is well-conceived and unusual in its classical simplicity. It contributes significantly to the architectural heritage in the locale and is significant as the former school for the local community.
