Exterior description and setting

A small single-storey red brick hall with pitched slate roof, built 1907.

The southwest front gable elevation faces the road. The segmental-headed doorway is off-centre with projecting brick surround and date-plaque over. The door is timber tongue and groove. Above the door a small plaque of painted concrete reads “Erected by the AOH in 1907 Div: 97”. The brick chimney is to the apex of this gable.

The northwest side elevation is brick with three segmental-headed window openings with expended metal guarding. Windows are replacement uPVC. Windows are symmetrically placed with brick piers between.

The rear northeast gable elevation is blank with the portable toilet kiosk located to one side and a decorative finial to the apex.

The southeast elevation has three windows and piers as before, and a segmental-headed door opening.

External walls are red brick, the roof is slate. The rainwater goods are plastic. The brick chimney has a dentilled string course and no pots.

Setting

The hall sits in a small field, facing the road. There is a farm adjacent to the site. A simple timber post and beam fence forms the front boundary, thick hedges the sides. The ground around the hall is mainly grass.

Historical information

According to its date stone, this hall was ‘erected by the AOH in 1907…’. The building is marked on the 1934-35 OS map as ‘Carnan Hibernian Hall’.

Evaluation

A small single-storey red brick hall with pitched slate roof, built 1907. This is a modest roadside rural hall, simply proportioned and detailed.
The naïve date stone/ plaque adds to the character of the building.
