Exterior description and setting

This is a detached Presbyterian Church, ‘Albany Presbyterian Church’ built c. 1838. It comprises a long rectangular nave with a single-storey flat-roofed entrance porch to the West, and a single-storey vestry to the rear East. The Church is set on the North side of Albany Road to the Northwest of Killycolp.

The entrance elevation is located to the side, and is one bay in width, whereas the side roadside elevation is three bays. The Church is unpainted dry dash render.

The West elevation is gable-ended. It has a single-storey projecting flat-roofed entrance porch which is located to the centre. The doorway located to the South of the porch, is square-headed with a panelled timber door. The door has a rendered surround with projecting kneelers and shoulders, pedimented to the top. There is a round-headed window to the side West of the porch, with stained glass set within. There is a continuous rendered string course at arch springer level and sill level. The porch has quoin stones to the edges and a projecting cut-stone base. The lean-to extension abutting the porch to the North has a single-storey lean-to with a black metal roof. There is a square-headed timber door to the West. The remainder of the West gable is largely blank. It has one small roundel to the centre of the gable.

The North and South elevations are three bays in width. The South elevation faces the road and entrance drive. Windows are long round-headed lancet timber set on cut-stone sills. There are plain rendered surrounds to windows. A round-headed carved stone surround surmounts the windows, forming a continuous stringcourse at arch springer level. There is a continuous rendered stringcourse at sill level. The centre window is surmounted by a datestone with a pedimented stucco surround. The datestone is inscribed ‘A-D 1838’.

The East elevation is gable-ended. It has two round-headed windows, with surrounds as previous. There is a roundel window to the gable. The single-storey vestry return is abutting the elevation to the right (North).

External walls to the front elevation are unpainted dry dash render, with smooth render bands to edges. There is a continuous rendered stringcourse at sill level and arch springer level. Walls rest on a projecting cut-stone plinth. The roof is hipped with natural slate. Rainwater goods are replacement extruded aluminium.

Returns

The single-storey vestry extension, built c. 1980, is located to the rear elevation. It is rectangular in plan. There is a square-headed timber casement window and modern timber door to the South elevation. There are three square-headed timber casement windows to the North elevation. The roof is pitched with artificial slate.

Setting

The Church is set on the North side of Albany Road to the Northwest of Killycolp. There is a single-storey Hall with a pitched roof located to the Southeast of the Church, adjacent to the roadside. A two-storey former Manse is located to the East of the Church.

Historical information

According to the date stone, this church was built in 1838. It is shown on the revised OS map of 1853-57 and marked ‘Albany Presbyterian meeting house’. The extension to the north-eastern corner appears to have been added c.1990s.

Evaluation

This is a detached Presbyterian Church, ‘Albany Presbyterian Church’ built c. 1838. It comprises a long rectangular nave with an entrance porch and a single-storey vestry. Alterations externally and internally degrade its quality and it is a common type, of which there are more original and complete examples.. The church hall and the former manse add some interest as a group.
