Exterior description and setting

A 6 bay long ½ storey cottage, gabled, concrete tile roof.

The entrance elevation has a shallow projecting porch with lean-to roof tucked under main eaves. Door 4 panel, moulded, with timber fascia over, ½ round gutter and downpipe. Walls of porch harled, painted white with black plinth. To the left of porch 2 widely spaced 12 pane double hung sliding sash windows and to the right 3 similar windows unequally spaced. No cills. Walls harled and whitewashed, black plinth. Timber fascia with ½ round gutter, single downpipe. Brown coloured concrete interlocking tiles on roof. One gable brick chimney and a second several metres from the other gable and on ridge.

Each gable, windowless with timber barge boards. Walls harled and whitewashed with black painted plinth. The rear wall has a central 4 panelled door and to the left 1, 12 panedouble hung sliding sash window and 1, 9 pane double hung sliding sash. To the right a 2 light, 9 pane double hung sliding sash windows and a 12 pane double hung sliding sash. Walls finished as front wall.

The cottage is placed at right angles to Springhill Road with gable close to roadside. A gravelled forecourt in front and to the rear stone built outbuildings with redbrick trim to openings with modern timber roofs and sheeted with corrugated iron. Stone gate piers with conical tops.

Historical information

The cottage is indicated on the O.S. map of 1832. The interlocking tiles on roof were carried out pre 1970 and replaced a thatched roof. Owner of cottage as in 1971. Cottage vacant.

Evaluation

A pleasing vernacular cottage with charm of early 19th cent date but has been diminished by a roof of interlocking brown concrete tiles and timber fascias and barge boards.
