Exterior description and setting

This is a detached single-storey piggery / byre / stable, built c.1870. It is long and rectangular in plan and is divided into three distinctive bays. The three bays share a common building line, having their own roofs and stepping down in height from the roadside with the slope of the field. The building is set perpendicular to the main Gortagammon Road.

The roofs are pitched with natural slate. All rainwater goods are cast-iron.

External walls are rendered rubble stone with brick dressings to some openings.
The front North elevation faces onto the field. It comprises three bays stepping down in height with the slope of the field. Each bay has a round-headed door opening. The openings have brick voussoirs and surrounds.

The side East and West elevations are gable-ended and have no openings. The roadside East elevation is partially covered in foliage.

The rear South elevation has an irregular assortment of square-headed windows and door openings. Some windows have been removed. The door opening to the centre has brick surrounds and an extended timber lintel.

Setting:
The building is located in fields and directly adjacent to the main Gortagammon Road with the roadside gable set on the verge. The building is set perpendicular to the road, and steps down in height with the slope of the hill.

Historical information

Although a building is shown occupying part of this site on the OS map of 1833-34, this does not appear on the revised OS map of 1854-57. The present structure is shown on the second edition map of 1905, however, and undoubtedly belonged to the now demolished house located just to the north, which appears to have dated from around 1870. The building appears to have been constructed to house various types of animals- perhaps horses and pigs

The accompany structures to the north appear to have been demolished c.1990.

Evaluation

This is a well preserved and extremely rare example of a small nineteenth-century rustic farm building combining several minor functions. It appears to combine a piggery with a byre and a stable. It is simply but robustly detailed; some rear openings have been enlarged but, otherwise, it is in original condition.
