Exterior description and setting

This is an end-of-terrace two-storey house, built c.1850. It is roughly square in plan with a gabled single-storey return to the rear. It forms part of a terrace of three on the Main Street of Tullaghoge.

The front South-eastern elevation fronts onto the street. It is two windows in width. To the left of the ground floor is a square-headed 6/6 timber sliding sash window set on a painted cut-stone sill. To the right is a square-headed doorway with a replacement timber and glazed door and an overlight. The upper level has windows as previous.

The side North-eastern elevation is gable-ended. There are no openings to this elevation.

The rear elevation has 6/6 timber sliding sash frames to both ground and first floor.

External walls are roughcast render to the front elevation and plain render to the side and rear.

The roof is pitched and slated with a rendered chimney to the East gable. There are decorative ridge tiles to the roof. Rainwater goods are replacement uPVC throughout.

Returns:
The single-storey return has a square-headed 3/6 timber sash frame. The roof is pitched with natural slate. Walls are random rubble.

There is a two-storey, (formerly pitched but now mono pitched) outbuilding to the rear. Walls are random rubble, which have been built up on the South face to form a lean-to roof.
There is a square-headed timber door facing the yard. There are metal sliding doors obscuring views from other openings.

Setting:
The house and terrace is set within the Main Street of Tullaghoge; they are set back behind small gardens. There is an open yard to the rear accessed via a cast-iron gate to the Northeast. The Main Street comprises largely of a series of single-storey and two-storey Victorian buildings.

Historical information

This house is shown on the OS map of 1857, and may date from around 1850. In the valuation of 1859 it is recorded as the home of an Arabella McGeagh, who held the lease from the Loughry estate. From 1877 the property was given over to ‘lodgers’, remaining as such until 1893 when an Alexander Bennison is listed as the occupant. He was followed by John Shaw in 1895, Thomas Harpur in 1899, Robert Wylie in 1905, and Mary A. Dilworth in 1911 (with a James Sands now the lessor). In the latter year the property is noted as containing a shop. Sarah Stewart became resident in 1913, staying until 1924, when she was succeeded by Jane Anderson. The property was still in the hands of the Anderson family in 1972.

Evaluation

This is a small mid-nineteenth century end of terrace 2-storey house. It retains its simple detailing and has group value with the other houses in the terrace but is of insufficient architectural interest to warrant listing.
