Exterior description and setting

A single-storey gabled building of asymmetrical plan with wet dashed walls painted cream, on red brick base courses, and with half-timbering to gables. Slated roofs; red brick chimney; canted bay. The building stands in a detached position within a public park set back slightly from the road behind a hedge, with grassed areas and mature trees around it.

Historical information

Date of building not recorded but stylistically is a work of the early 1900s and may be attributed to Nicholas Fitzsimons of Larne who designed the Smiley Memorial Cottage Hospital on the opposite side of the road. This building lies in the area of a scheduled monument, no. ANT 40:35.

Originally an attractive example of a gate lodge in a ‘Domestic Revival’ idiom characteristic of the ‘Turn of the Century’ period and attributable to a leading local architect of the time, but spoiled by later alterations and additions.
