Exterior description and setting

Three blocks of terrace houses, each block comprising four two-storey houses, with hipped roofs of Bangor Blue slates in regular courses, rendered walls, some smooth and some dry dashed using limestone chippings. Oriel windows to first floor; all windows rectangular but with alter replacement frames, some containing plate glass and some containing small panes; flat canopy on brackets over doorways originally, but some later porches added; all doors later replacements.
Setting: the houses stand facing the main street, set back slightly from it with small gardens in front; front boundary formed partly by rendered walls and partly by hedges.

Historical information

Built as a ‘Soldiers and Sailors’ Housing Scheme (for returned servicemen after the 1st World War), in the 1920s to one of the standard designs produced by the government architects’ department. Documents in the Ministry of Finance files held at HMB in Hill Street, Belfast, show that such houses were built in Larne c 1923.

This is a group of terrace houses of some interest as examples of a particular inter-war type produced by an important architectural office of the period, but later alterations have been detrimental to their appearance.
