Exterior description and setting

A large structure built as a lime kiln, constructed of squared greystone in regular courses, with two kiln openings set in segmental arches of shaped voussoirs in its front face. Side walls are carried forward to form battered buttresses with stepped abutments at base.
Within outer arch, each kiln has two smaller recessed arches; kiln to left has cracks above outermost arch; kiln to right has some stonework missing at first recessed arch. Battered faces to two sides; crack to left hand side wall. Buttress to left abutted by basalt rubble wall, partly harled, which returns in curve to side boundary up to main road, with basalt blocks as coping. Tubular metal railings around front and sides at parapet level, 20th century additions, supplemented by timber slat fencing to left hand portion. Top surface of kilns grassed over, divided longitudinally by party fence; small rectangular area of grassed area on top of kiln to north fenced off where former access located, now filled in. The kilns stand to the rear of two houses, on a sloping site, with the back lawns of the houses extending onto the top of the kilns. They front a public path to the rear of the houses, which extends from the promenade, facing the sea.

A good example of a once fairly common structure, in a derelict condition, but of impressive scale and easily viewed from a public pathway.
