Exterior description and setting

A 1½ storey gabled 3-bay house with a basement storey to the rear. Main entrance faces south.

Main elevation built of clinker brick with red brick dressings to windows and porch. Roof of asbestos slates with sprocketed eaves; yellow brick chimney on each gable; main windows rectangular timber sash, vertically hung, 1 over 1, with horns, with lattice glazing to upper sashes; casement windows to dormer.

Porch has smooth cement rendered walls; red quarry tiled floor; rectangular ledged timber door with oval glazed panel; sidelights rectangular, with 5 panes incorporating tinted glass; concrete copings to nib walls of porch.

West gable smooth cement rendered with windows sashed 1 over 1 and 3 over 3. Rear elevation has similar walling with a variety of window types, and three original rooflights to roof. East gable rendered with wet dash of stone chippings, with mixture of sashed and casement windows.

SETTING: The building stands facing the main road set well back from it within its own grounds which includes a small rivulet which flows close to the house. The site slopes down to the rear and contains mature trees. Front boundary wall of plain red brick.

Historical information

Designed and built by William Calwell of Ballycarry; precise date not known but built c 1920s or 1930s. Does not appear on OS map of 1921; appears for the first time on the OS map of 1965. Calwell (1863-1953) lived at no. 54 Main Street in a house which attracted local attention as the first bungalow in the area, designed and built for himself c 1908.

Evaluation

This is an example of a house of early 20th century date of minor local interest as having been designed and built by a local builder whose own house was well known as being the first bungalow in the area, but this house is entirely conventional in design and construction and is not intrinsically of special architectural or historic interest.
