Exterior description and setting

A 1½ storey house designed in the manner of a Californian bungalow. Main entrance faces east.

East elevation consists of the main gable clad with wooden shingles to the upper part which oversails a full width recessed veranda area below, marked by a wide arch of white painted timber lattice-work between square masonry end piers faced with small stones. Wall within veranda area white painted smooth cement render. One rectangular three-light timber casement window to upper part of gable; two rectangular timber windows to lower area one each side of central doorway containing small paned glazed door.
Roof of synthetic slates, not original, with chimney apparently removed from south side.

Undistinguished south elevation of white painted smooth cement render, with later lean-to car-port. Undistinguished rear elevation containing modern windows. North elevation is abutted by adjoining post office.

SETTING: The house stands facing the main street but set back from it slightly with concrete area in front enclosed by a white-painted rendered wall.

Historical information

Designed and built by William Calwell of Ballycarry; precise date not known but built c 1920s or 1930s. It appears for the first time on the OS map of 1965. Calwell (1863-1953) lived on the other side of the Main Street at no. 54 in a bungalow built for himself c 1908.

This is an example of a house of early 20th century date which displays American influence in the main features of its entrance front but is otherwise architecturally undistinguished.
