Exterior description and setting

A 1½ storey gabled house with roughcast walls and clinker brick dressings, and black painted projecting plinth. Main entrance faces west.

West elevation has two rectangular windows, timber sliding sash, vertically hung, with multi-paned upper sash over single pane lower sash, 39 over 1, with long horns; projecting cill of stone or concrete, painted. To right hand side is a rectangular recessed porch with chunky open timber lattice-work spandrel; floor of modern quarry tiles; window in rear of recess detailed as main front windows. Main entrance door panelled with Arts and Crafts style decorative wrought iron hinges; 12-pane fanlight, rectangular.

Dormer in attic with swept roof; two wide rectangular windows in front face, either side of broad central mullion; windows rectangular timber sashed, 8 over 1, with similar details to main front windows; cheeks of dormer built of brickwork. Two chimneys in line with dormer, built of brickwork.

PVC gutter and downpipes.

North elevation is three-storey, comprising white painted roughcast upper storey over black painted basement. Three windows to basement, all timber sliding sash, 1 over 1, with horns. Two windows to main ground floor storey, similar sashes to basement. Two attic windows, one timber sliding sash as previous, the other PVC replacement of fixed light with top-hung vent.

Rear elevation is 3-storey, comprising ground floor on basement, with the central portion of main storey two windows wide rising to form a central dormer. All windows sashed 1 over 1, except a replacement to right hand side which is PVC as previous to north gable. Projecting from rear elevation at right hand side is a low single storey garage wing.

South elevation comprises south gable, of similar character to north with two windows to basement, none to ground floor, and two to attic, both original sashed windows.

SETTING: The house stands facing the main street, and set back within its own garden.

Front boundary formed by low smooth rendered wall with central pedestrian gateway of square piers containing timber gate of diagonal and cross pattern; to right hand extremity is a vehicular gateway comprising square rubble piers faced with small stones, painted white, with flat concrete caps, and containing a timber gate of diagonal and cross pattern.

Historical information

Designed and built by William Calwell of Ballycarry for a Mr Sturdy; precise date not known but built c 1920s or 1930s. It does not appear on the OS map of 1921 but appears for the first time on the revision of 1965. Calwell (1863-1953) lived next door at no. 54 in a bungalow built for himself c 1908. No. 54 was built on the tennis court of Calwell's own house.

Evaluation

This is an example of a house of early 20th century date, but despite some minor idiosyncracies in detailing it is essentially a conventional dwelling of its period and is not of overall special architectural or historic interest.
