Exterior description and setting

A two-storey house with half dormers,which stands as part of a terrace of cottages, and comprising two houses (nos. 304 and 306) now joined into one property known as no. 306.

Main entrance faces south. South facade has lean-to porch to left enclosing entrance doorway, with four windows to right to ground floor, and two gabled dormers above.

Roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses, continuous with roof of no. 302 to the left, and ending with slight overhang to verge at gable to right. One chimney on ridge, smooth cement rendered, unpainted, replacement finish, previously painted white, with modern terracotta pots; cast iron gutters and downpipes; timber barge boards to dormers; dormer roofs slated as previous; wall roughtcast. Porch of timber framing, glazed, on concrete block base wall, later addition since 1960 at least, inappropriate. All windows of house rectangular timber, with top-hung vent above fixed light, 2 over 2, with vertical divisions; dormers additions since at least 1960; ground floor windows replacements of 1991 for original small-paned windows, probably sashed; cills stone painted black. To right hand extremity of front wall, trace of original doorway of no. 306, now blocked up. Further to right, set back, small single-storey gabled addition of lower ridge line; roof as previous contained by coping of gable to right; cast iron gutter and downpipe; timber ledged door in rectangular opening.

Rear elevation, single-storey: roof as previous, with four flush rooflights, new; wall as previous with three rectangular windows, timber fixed light with top-hung vent; flat-roofed return with projecting porch on north side, large rectangular timber window with top-hung vent to right hand corner over fixed pane. Adjacent, a detached gabled garage with white roughcast walls, new.

SETTING: The building is part of a terrace of cottages attached to one side of a Methodist Church, set back at an angle to the main road, sited in a rural location and easily visible from the road.

Historical information

Appears on the OS map of 1902-3. Old photographs in Islandmagee Methodist Church show the building without dormers in 1940 but with dormers by 1960. Nos. 304 and 306 together were at one time Ballymoney School, shown thus on the OS map of 1902-3.
