Exterior description and setting

A two-storey house with half dormers built as part of a terrace.

Main entrance faces south. South facade has door with two windows to right on ground floor and two dormers above. Ground floor window to left of door lights lobby of adjoining Methodist church, but roof space above it is part of this house. Roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses; one chimney on ridge, smooth cement rendered, unpainted, replacement finish, previously painted white, with modern terracotta pot; cast iron gutters and downpipes; timber barge boards to dormers; dormer roofs slated as previous; wall roughcast. All windows rectangular timber, with top-hung vent above fixed light, 2 over 2, with vertical divisions; dormers additions since at least 1960; ground floor windows replacements of 1991 for original small paned windows, probably sliding sashed. Cills stone, painted black. Door rectangular wooden panelled with large upper panel glazed with patterned translucent glass, replacement.

Rear elevation: roof as front elevation, but with two flush roof lights, new; slight overhang to verge at gable wall as front, single storey height, with later flat-roofed return to left; asphalt roof covering; timber fascias; large white painted wooden rectangular windows comprising large fixed lights with top-hung and fixed toplights, in north and west walls, the latter one incorporating a rectangular door. To right, two timber fixed light and side-hung casements in rear wall of house but actually light ancillary rooms to rear of adjacent Methodist church, although blank walling and roofspace above is part of this property.

SETTING: The building is part of a terrace of cottages attached to one side of a Methodist church with its front garden bordered to one side by the church, all set back a slight distance form the main road, sited in a rural location, and easily visible from the road.

Historical information

Appears on the OS Map of 1902-3. Old photographs in Islandmagee Methodist Church show the building without dormers in 1940, but with dormers by 1960, and also show the infill bay next to the church unbuilt in 1940.
