Exterior description and setting

A building of asymmetrical form and plain appearance consisting of a tall 2½-storey block with a lower 2-storey wing to one end, all rendered, with slated roofs. Main entrance faces east.

Roofs of Bangor blue slates in regular courses, hipped to the taller block, with gabled dormers, and gabled to the wing, with a modern flat-roofed attic addition between the two blocks. Chimneys are rendered, with modern pots to the taller block, and original pots to the long wing. Walls are smooth cement rendered, with quoins to the left-hand extremity of the taller block. PVC gutters and downpipes. Windows to the taller block are mainly rectangular timber sliding sash, 6 over 6 with horns, set in plain reveals, but the dormer windows are modern rectangular fixed lights with top-hung vents; a pair of canted bays to the ground floor contain what appear to be small-paned timber fixed lights with small paned top-hung vents. Windows to the long wing are rectangular timber sliding sash, 2 over 2, with horns, and 6 over 6 with horns, as well as modern 6-pane fixed lights with 6-pane top-hung vents. Main entrance is a glazed small-paned timber door with sidelights and fanlight, of 20th century appearance, recessed between the twin canted bays.
Side elevation of tall block, facing south, is rendered with a dry dash of mixed chippings.

SETTING: The building stands within the built-up area of the village, facing the main street with a small garden area running along the front enclosed by plain iron railings on a rendered plinth wall. The long lower wing is adjoined by terrace properties at the north end.

Historical information

Precise date of building not known but it appears as two separate blocks on the OS map of 1857. This was a hotel in the 1980s; later became the Antrim Coast Private Nursing Home.
