Exterior description and setting

A two-storey, three-bay gabled and slated house. Main entrance faces west.

Entrance elevation: roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses, with eaves raking up slightly to left-hand side; tin guttering with cast iron downpipe. Wall rendered with dry dash of pebbles and mixed blackstone and limestone chippings, with smooth cement rendered quoins to extremities, and similar plinth. Three windows to first floor and two to ground floor, one to each side of central doorway; arrangement not symmetrical. Windows are rectangular timber sliding sash, vertically hung, 1 over 1 with horns, set in lugged smooth cement rendered surrounds with projecting concrete cills. Doorway contains a modern rectangular panelled door set in similar surround to windows.

North elevation comprises gable of main front block to the right with the two-storey rear return extending to the left: roof slated as previous; walls rendered as previous, with smooth cement rendered borders at extremities and similar plinth; timber barge boards to gable and eaves board to return; metal gutter and cast iron downpipe; PVC soil pipe. Four windows, sashed as previous to entrance front, without horns, in similar surrounds. Modern rectangular glazed flush door.

Rear elevation: two-storey gable rendered as previous to north elevation; timber barge boards; PVC downpipe. Windows are rectangular timber top-hung single pane, in surrounds as previous.

SETTING: The house stands within the built-up area of the village, facing on to High Street, with an adjoining building to one side and an open plot to the other side between the north elevation and a terrace of houses; part of side plot used for car parking. Concrete backyard, incorporating two steps for change of level. To rear of yard is a lean-to outbuilding, with walls rendered similar to the house, and corrugated iron roof. Boundary wall to south and east formed by neighbouring buildings, dry-dash finish to south, limestone rubble to east.

Historical information

Precise date of building not known: a building is shown on the site on the OS map of 1832, but the present building probably dates from the mid-19th century or later.

This is a mid-19th century building which has lost many of its original features in the course of exterior and interior alterations, and is of no special architectural or historic interest.
