Exterior description and setting

A two and three-storey building with roughly rendered and whitened walls and slated roofs, which appears to have been originally one dwelling but is now divided into three self-contained apartments. Main elevation faces north.

North elevation: roofs of Bangor blue slates in regular courses, with one modern rooflight; three new red brick chimneys with modern pots; walls rough rendered and whitened, with patches of smooth rendered repair work; PVC gutters and metal downpipes. Windows are rectangular timber sliding sash, 2 over 2 with horns, with exposed frames, set in plain reveals; one window to ground floor is flanked by timber shutters and set in a panel of timber sheeting recessed in a former rectangular coach doorway. One domestic doorway, numbered 110, containing a rectangular sheeted door in plain reveals, and one garage doorway to extreme right, containing a pair of sheeted doors.

East gables are plain blank walls; PVC soil pipe.

Rear elevation is of similar materials and character, except rainwater goods are of light metal; two modern rooflights; one rectangular sheeted doorway, not numbered, in the main rear wall, approached by concrete flag steps. To the left is a lean-to projection with a doorway, as previous, numbered 112, set in the side wall facing west.

West gable is rough rendered as previous; contains three windows, as previous, sashed 1 over 1 with horns; PVC soil pipe.

SETTING: The building stands in a very rural and scenic location, in an isolated position, facing the main coastal road, overlooking the sea, and set back slightly from the road with a modern pink concrete brick paved area in front bordered by concrete kerbstones laid flat. The building is set into rising ground with modern concrete flagged steps up each side, to a modern concrete paved area across the rear; a steep and verdant hillside rises behind. Extending to the east of the building is whitened cement coated boundary walling of basalt rubble, and to the west is a rendered modern concrete block wall set back behind a modern paved parking area.
Grassed plot to east is entered by a modern tubular steel gate on timber posts.

Historical information

Precise date of building not known but it appears for the first time on the OS map of 1903, and probably dates from the second half of the 19th century. According to one authority it was an inn and horse stable before the opening of the new coast road in the early 1840s, but it does not appear on either the OS map of 1832 or the OS map of 1857. Renovated in 1992.

This is a 19th century building of no special architectural interest, which has lost many of its original features and much of its original vernacular character due to renovation and alterations.
