The Department's description

Exterior description and setting

A square pedestal with double plinth on square step with shallow gabled capping piece undercut with cavetto moulding. Above a square obelisk of similar height all in white marble. Obelisk has small marble wreath on E face.

It sits on a square stepped base, set in red paving stones further set in a sunken semi-circular garden. The names of the dead inscribed on 4 sides of pedestal of 2 World Wars.

Historical information

Erected in c 1920s. Like other monuments in the town, the immediate surrounds have been altered from time to time.

Evaluation

A modest 1920s war memorial in white marble in a pleasant setting at the end of Quay Road and opposite the former manor house. Though of note the structure is not considered to be a war memorial of special interest.
