Exterior description and setting

Original hotel demolished and a modern 3 storey hotel building erected on the site.,on a corner site, with separate 3 storey apartment blocks and leisure centre.

In the first survey (October 1972) this hotal was described as 'A three-storey stucco building, 16 bay to Quay Road, 19 bay to North Street with canted bays, porches and castellations.Windows are plain sashed, roofs are slated,dormers(?) and main gables have king post decoration. Porch roofs are being replaced. There are decorative iron railings. There is a coat-of-arms of George II on end block in North Street, originally the custom house.'

Historical information

C Dallat in his map illustrating the town of 1760 indicates an inn near the corner of Quay Road and North Street. The O.S. Map of 1832 shows a terrace of houses at the end of Quay Road facing east and the 1856 revision shows little change. The Marine Hotel is marked on the O.S. Map of 1904 as a corner building fronting onto North Street. The building suffered damage in c 1970s. Subsequently it was demolished and the present hotel building erected in the early 1990s. This was followed by apartment blocks and leisure centre erected in 1994.

Evaluation

Historic hotel demolished and replaced by a late 20th cent. typical seaside hotel and apartment building, 3 storeys high. This is not of special arcitectiral or historic interest. It however forms a useful function in terminating the terrace house in North Street and turning the corner into Quay Road with a positive façade looking towards Mary Street and the site of the former harbour (now filled in).
